What inspired the creation of Racondier, and how did you choose such a unique name for your brand?

The idea for Racondier emerged from a desire to blend tailoring with a narrative-driven approach. I wanted to create garments that are born from the world of Racondier, not from pre-existing ideas of tailoring. In order to create our own world, it was really important that the name of the brand was separate from the designer. The word Racondier has no original meaning, so it was completely mine to work with and build around. I thought it sounded a bit like a French sparkling water, which is strangely perfect.

You've mentioned that Racondier draws inspiration from all around the globe. Can you share how this influences your designs?

I am innately curious and believe inspiration can strike at any time. Racondier's perspective is not that of any one particular style, culture or era - it is truly cosmopolitan. It’s about taking all of the various things that inspire me, - whether that is cinema, music, places, aroma, emotion, colour or objects - to build a brand that’s rich, diverse, and ever-changing.

Racondier focuses on attention to detail. Can you explain the importance of handwork in your garments?

All of our garments have some level of handwork. It's essential that human hands have a role in what we create because it breathes life into the garment. There is something very personal about the process. This ethos extends beyond our clothing and accessories. I love the process of creating and am always thinking of ways to be more thoughtful and personal to the customer. I still use a typewriter for receipts!

With the industry moving fast, how does Racondier maintain a commitment to sustainability and ethical practices?

Sustainability is one of our core philosophies. We prioritise quality materials that are ethically sourced and employ techniques that minimise waste. Our fabrics are some of the best and most resourceful in the world. By focusing on made-to-order, we produce garments on demand, reducing overproduction. We are currently planning some ready-to-wear pieces which will also reflect this commitment to sustainability.

Racondier has an obsession with objects, from magazines to unusual ornaments. Could you share your favourite piece that you've collected over the years?

Besides my stack of New Yorkers and the array of random magazines, I have a Japanese-made CARL pencil sharpener in yellow, which I picked up online a number of years back. It just makes me happy using it. I'm a thrifter by nature and get a lot of joy out of finding cool objects.

Looking forward, what can we expect from Racondier? You mentioned exploring ready-to-wear.

While our made-to-measure service will always be at the heart of Racondier, I'm really excited to broaden our horizons with the prospect of introducing ready-to-wear pieces. This new venture is about making our brand’s ethos and product accessible to a wider audience. More trunk shows are also on the cards - looking at major Australian cities such as Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. We have a lot of interest in our tailoring in the USA also, so it would be amazing to host a trunk show internationally. Time will tell. Stay tuned.
